The Centre for International Education and Collaboration (CIEC) of the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA) has hosted the University’s international students at a cocktail reception. The students are from Serbia, Nigeria, Benin, Togo and Cote d'Ivoire.
The reception provided the students not only with the opportunity to mingle with one another, but also to receive information about their stay at the University, as well as issues pertaining to immigration and consular services.
According to Acting Dean of CIEC, Dr. Kweku Rockson, who welcomed the students, the University was delighted that they had chosen UPSA as their preferred university in Ghana and hoped that they would make the best out of the opportunity.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Charles Barnor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor encouraged the students to make time to study as they enjoy their stay on campus and the country as well.
"What defines UPSA is the policy systems that are in place. You will enjoy the environment, student life and relationships that you build, but above all, UPSA will require you to excel in your studies, because we don't comprise on the quality here," he said.
He again assured the students that their lecturers and Management will do everything possible to make their stay pleasurable.
A representative of the Ghana Immigration Service, Chief Superintendent Daniel Fiaglo, educated the students on regulations of foreign nationals in the country. He also advised them on the need to get a student permit to be legally accepted in the country while encouraging them to pay their residential permits regularly.
The reception was also attended by the Vice-Dean of CIEC, Dr Koryoe Anim-Wright, Mr Geoffrey Gle, the Acting Director of the Public Affairs Directorate and representatives from the Ghana Immigration Service and the Student’s Representative Council (SRC) as well as some staff of the University.
Vodafone Ghana Limited will from the beginning of November this year, offer employment opportunities to students of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), as part of its newly established Students’ Jobber Initiative.
The initiative which seeks to hire second- and third-year students of selected tertiary institutions will offer students the needed working experience while in school and “put some monies in their pockets” at the same time.
Announcing the offer in a meeting with the student body, some deans and heads of department of the university, the head of the Vodafone delegation, Wilfred Ashong said the move was to reduce the financial burden of students, as according to him, many students struggle to keep up with academic life on campus due to harsh economic conditions.
“Beneficiaries of this programme will earn some extra income and gain some working experience. They will also have the opportunity to work with a globally recognized company, build a network and position themselves to be employed permanently after this enterprise,” he explained.
Mr Ashong also added that students who sign up would also enjoy free lunch, a weekly transportation stipend, airtime among other auxiliary benefits.
He further revealed that the first 100-slot for employment under the jobber initiative would be allocated to students from UPSA, out of which 40 students will be selected to undergo piloting this October.
Participants within this period would be taken through eight weeks of intensive training in corporate sales management and work ethics.
“Any student who is able to display the values of Vodafone in relation to our customers or any student who is able to go the extra mile to excite our customers would be recognized and awarded accordingly,” he concluded.
The Acting Dean of the Centre for International Education and Collaboration (CIEC), Dr. Kweku Rockson, acknowledged Vodafone for choosing UPSA for this laudable project and assured the team that students from the institution would make them proud at the end of the exercise.
The Jobber Initiative according to the team would be extended to cover students from other tertiary institutions in the near future.
