The Department of Public Relations, under auspices of the Faculty of IT and Communications Studies, on thursday May 2019 held a special seminar on the theme “Film and the Publicness / Public sphere in Southern Africa.

 

Delivering a paper on the theme, the guest presenter, a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Film and Media Studies, University of Cape Town and an African Humanities Programme (AHP) Visiting Fellow, Dr. Litheko Modisane, advanced that a film is an idea – a mental impression - that can be made to function in a particular manner and conceptuality affect society, self and nature. He added that a film is an object that can circulate, become dormant and re-circulate and that individuals could give different interpretations to films watched. This implies that films create mental imagery in the minds of viewers and so must be consciously used to affect society positively.

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Charles Barnor, in his welcome address, applauded the Department and Faculty for having the best human resource and advised students to utilise every opportunity at their disposal. The Acting Head of Department of Public Relations, Dr Theodora Dame Adjin-Tettey said the seminar was conceived in preparation of plans to run degree programmes in Communications and Media Studies in the Department.

The programme was graced by The Dean of the Faculty of IT and Communication Studies, Dr John Bosco Damnyang, Deputy Director of the Research and Consultancy Centre, Dr Joseph Tuffuor, the Head of Department of IT Studies, Dr Godfred Yaw Koi-Akrofi., lecturers and students of the Faculty.
